Brit makes record-breaking giant NES controller

Posted by

A British engineering student unveiling his gargantuan working Nintendo Entertainment System controller at Liverpool Lime Street and bagged himself a spot in the Guinness world record books.

Officially measuring in at 366 cm x 159 cm x 51 cm (12ft x 5ft 3 in x 1ft 8 in), which equates to thirty times the size of a normal NES controller, the device is the creation of Ben Allen, currently studying at Delft University of Technology in Holland after the idea cropped up during a trip to the pub Co-creators Stephen van ‘t Hof and Michel Verhulst.

Of course, I’m not going to suggest that there was something in the air of that particular Dutch pub which spurred this idea on – but as ideas go this one could only really come out of the Netherlands.

Commuters at the station dropped by and had a go on the giant pad, playing classics like Mario and Tetris – although either needing teamwork or a quick sprint along its length to reach the B button in time.

Created as part of a university project it took 5 months to create with an estimated cost of £4,000.

His next project will be a little different as he aims to create a 50ft Xbox controller – a significant downsize on the current model.
